The acid-base balance describes the regulation of acids and bases in the human body. In healthy people, the pH level of the blood is tightly regulated by the lungs, kidneys, and the body's own buffering systems.

Acid-Base Balance: What Diet Actually Influences

Foods can provide different metabolic products and influence, among other things, the excretion of acid through the kidneys. How much acid is excreted depends, among other things, on the composition of the diet.

However, this does not mean that ordinary foods "over-acidify" or "de-acidify" the entire body. In healthy people, the blood pH is kept within a narrow range and cannot be changed at will by individual foods.

Alkaline or Acidic: What Does That Mean?

Terms such as "acid-forming" and "alkaline-forming" usually refer to models of the potential acid load of the diet.

They do not indicate that a food directly changes the pH level of the blood. The taste of a food also does not allow for a reliable conclusion as to how it is classified in metabolism.

A varied diet with plenty of vegetables and fruit, whole grains, legumes, and sufficient fluids can be a sensible basis for a balanced diet, regardless of such classifications.

Heartburn Is Something Else

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. It is not equivalent to a general "over-acidification of the body." If heartburn is frequent or persistent, the cause should be investigated by a doctor.

What Does the pH Level of Urine Show?

The pH level of urine can change throughout the day and depending on diet, fluid intake, and other factors.

Urine pH test strips are therefore not suitable for diagnosing a general "over-acidification of the body" or medical acidosis.

An actual disorder of the acid-base balance of the blood is a medical condition and should be investigated by a doctor.

Does the Body Need an Alkalizing Cure?

For healthy people, no special "alkalizing" or "alkaline" cure is required to regulate the blood pH.

So-called "toxins," which are supposed to be released from the body by alkaline products or certain foods, are also not a scientifically established mechanism in this context.

A varied diet, sufficient fluids, exercise, and an overall balanced lifestyle are more sensible than dividing everyday life into "over-acidifying" and "alkalizing."

And What About Kombucha?

Due to the organic acids produced during fermentation, kombucha typically tastes sour.

However, no special "alkaline," "alkalizing," or blood-pH-regulating effect can be derived from its taste or fermentation. Kombucha is a fermented tea drink and not a remedy for treating a disorder of the acid-base balance.

A peaceful wellness atmosphere as inspiration for a relaxing evening routine

Kombucha Foot Bath as a DIY Ritual

A warm foot bath can be a relaxing part of your evening routine. However, if you are interested in an unusual DIY ritual, you should keep in mind that highly acidic kombucha or kombucha vinegar can irritate the skin. Warm water is usually sufficient for a regular foot bath.

What You Need:

  • A bowl or foot bath tub with pleasantly warm water
  • Optional: a small amount of mineral salt, provided you tolerate it well
  • Optional: a suitable bath product designed for the skin

How to Do It:

Fill the foot bath tub with pleasantly warm, not hot, water. If necessary, add some suitable mineral salt and soak your feet for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then dry them thoroughly and enjoy a relaxing break.

Do not use highly acidic kombucha or kombucha vinegar on irritated, injured, or cracked skin. You should not add essential oils to the water undiluted, as they can cause skin irritation. If you have sensitive skin or existing skin problems, it is sensible to avoid such additives.

Enjoy your little break!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Acid-Base Balance

Can Kombucha Alkalize the Body?

There is insufficient scientific evidence that kombucha specifically alkalizes the body or regulates the pH level of the blood. The body regulates this itself through buffering systems, the lungs, and the kidneys.

Can an Alkaline Diet Change the Blood pH?

Diet can influence the excretion of acid through the kidneys. However, in healthy people, the pH level of the blood is tightly regulated. An alkaline-oriented diet does not change it at will.

Is Acidic Urine a Sign of Over-Acidification?

No. Urine pH changes naturally and depends, among other things, on diet and fluid intake. A single measurement is not reliable evidence of a medical disorder of the acid-base balance.
